The Marriage Foundation, a relationships think tank examined figures from the Office for National Statistics and found that 45 % of first marriages end in divorce, compared with 31 % for second ones. Not only are couples on their second marriages less likely to separate, but they are also happier.
Nobody has unrealistic expectations the second time around. Nobody expects their new spouse to mend them magically: they have become self-reliant. They have learnt that even tiny, seemingly silly arguments can have the most cumulatively corrosive effect, so they don't bother having them. They know what not to do.
